人的水葬视水为人类生存的先决条件，也是必须的物质之一。没有水的世界是不堪设想的。他们又高居深山峡谷，无法实施天葬，又缺少火葬的基本燃料，实行土葬，经年冰封的高原环境又不适宜，而惟一拥有的是一条或几条长年奔腾不息的大江大河，选择它来处理尸体是最好的方法。不论从意识形态出发，还是从外在的物质客体出发都符合高原民族的传统习惯。
3，水葬受原始宗教的影响。在藏区，不少地方除了以上因素外，在观念深处水葬和远古苯教有很多相似的观点。把尸体抛入水中喂鱼，正是对河神的祭祀。在传说故事中的河婆吃人，要求每年定期给河婆抛入童男童女以防河水泛滥成灾是同样的祭祀河神的例子。水葬的形成主要是宗教的因素，后来佛教的传人和本教的某些理论又有相同之处，便将其保存下来。
